There are 3 main types of memory that we all experience on a daily basis. These are classified by the amount of time that the memory retains the information. They are:
Sensory Memory – Sensory memory is the most basic type of memory and it lasts about a split second (200-500 milliseconds). For example, when you look at an orange, you know that you are looking at an orange and you can see that the orange is round. You don’t stare at an orange and realize every second that you see a new orange. Sensory memory is extremely important, but for more complex organisms such as human beings, we need to be able to retain information for much longer periods of time.
Short Term Memory – Short term memory is similar to sensory memory, except that information can be retained much longer. Instead of just a millisecond, information is retained for a few seconds, up to a minute with ‘practice’ (practice means when a person makes an effort to retain information for a longer period of time).
A good explanation of short term memory is when someone gives you a phone number to dial. Most times you will only remember the number for a few seconds (just long enough for you to dial the phone). Many people even have difficulty remembering a 7 digit phone number, short term memory (without practice) usually only retains about 4-7 items.
In order to remember a 7 digit phone number, we use a process called ‘chunking’, where you chunk the numbers together in smaller groups. To remember the 7 digit phone number you would chunk the first 3 numbers together and the last 4 numbers together. Making it easier to remember two small groups of numbers than one large group.
Long Term Memory – Long term memory is very important and to a degree, it is what makes us the people that we are. It is the type of memory that has the ability to last an entire lifetime. What makes long term memory even more powerful is that the amount of information that can be retained is usually limitless. With practice, such as studying or practicing a task, you can easily retain complex information for very long periods of time.
